My name is Sara Kribs. I am passionate about teaching piano! As a pianist and educator, there is nothing quite like watching a young student (or student of any age) discover that making music is quite literally at their fingertips. With just enough of the right information, a student may find themselves quickly playing songs of their choice, whether famous classical melodies, movie themes, or even accompanying themsevles at the piano while singing their favourite pop songs. When making music comes to life for someone, I know something worthy has been passed along. This feeling fuels me each week, month, and year as I work with my students.
"Who can take lessons?"
Piano lessons are for students of all ages, from the very youngest learners all the way through adults, including seniors. Some of the earliest beginners will start as young as age three, though age five and above is traditional. I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of every age.
"What types of things do you teach?"
I enjoy teaching classical music and many other types of music. I believe students will approach the piano with the greatest enthusiasm if they are taught to play music they know and love, whether it is classical, pop, rock, or any of the other musical genres. I believe in teaching not only the traditional basics of technique and reading, but also how to play by ear and with chords. In this way, students can approach any form of music with confidence.
Students will be carefully guided within their own individual levels, abilities, learning styles, and musical interests. Students are invited to study, at their own pace, areas of musical expression, reading, memorization, technique, ear-training, improvisation, music theory, and composition, in an effort to create complete musicians who feel comfortable within their craft.
"Will we need a piano?"
Yes and no! Yes, you will need an instrument in your home on which to take your lessons and for your weekly practicing. However, if it is not an actual (acoustic) piano, that is OK. I start many students on keyboards, and suitable keyboards can be found at reasonable prices to rent, rent-to-own, or own. Or, if you are interested in obtaining an actual acoustic piano, there are many avenues for purchase, whether new or used, and no matter what your budget-- including free pianos on Craigslist! Either way, I would be happy to guide you towards a suitable instrument that fits your needs.
Location:
I provide individualized, in-home private piano lessons in neighbourhoods across downtown Toronto. My customary driving range includes East York, Riverdale, Leslieville, Cabbagetown, Rosedale, Leaside, and Roncesvalles, though I consider each student's location on a case-by-case basis. Please contact me to inquire whether one of my teaching routes could incorporate your location.
